NCGA.ORG | FALL 2018 71 August 20-24 | Poppy Hills GC and Spyglass Hill Tony Padilla knows about staying calm in high pressure situations. The 56-year-old Sacramento resident does it all the time working as a college basketball referee. So when it came time to tee it up in the final against two-time defending champ Randy Haag, Padilla was ready. Padilla was nearly mistake free, making just one bogey in a 4-and-2 victory over Haag. Padilla, who plays out of Winchester CC, rattled off nine pars in a row beginning at the second hole. He then knocked his second shot on the par-5 11th hole to 10 feet, making the putt for eagle to go 3 up. Another birdie on the 13th finally got Padilla comfortable. "When I made birdie on 13 that was huge. Randy was in there about 8 feet. I made a 30-footer and he ended up just missing his putt. That swung the tide in my direction," Padilla said. Haag was hoping to complete the rare NCGA Senior "three- peat" by winning the event for a third consecutive year. Over in the Super Senior, there was also a new winner. Ron Johnson, 72 of Walnut Creek, defeated two-time defending champ Frank Pieper, 1 up, on the final hole. On the front-nine, Johnson built what looked to be an insurmountable 4-up lead, but Pieper didn't give in. Pieper, who plays out of Monterey Peninsula CC, got a win on the par-5 11th hole with a birdie to get the match to 3 up, and then bogeys from Johnson on holes 15 and 16 put Pieper back in the match. Johnson stood firm, however, getting up and down from a precarious position behind the green on 17 to maintain his 1-up lead. On the 18th, Pieper missed the fairway off the tee, his ball landing in thick rough. He'd make par, but Johnson also made par to close the match. "Having my name on any NCGA trophy is always a thrill. I've got one for the Senior-Four Ball, one in the Super Senior Championship, and now the Super Senior Match Play," Johnson said. 12th NCGA Senior and Super Senior Amateur Match Play Championship 36th NCGA Associate Club Championship Caddy Club of Mayacama: 123-128—251 August 20-21 | Spyglass Hill and Poppy Hills GC Tony Padilla Ron Johnson 20th NCGA Senior Four-Ball Net Championship Lyal Beeskau and Roger Brandt: 64-59—123 September 10-11 | Poppy Ridge GC PWGA Helen Lengfeld High School Girls' Championship Granite Bay: 261 Sept. 10 | Diamond Oaks GC
