CALIFORNIA SENIOR AMATEUR I t was a great finish to what's been a career year for Green Valley Country Club member Jeff Wilson. Wilson shot a final round 2-under 70 at par-72 The Preserve Golf Club on Nov. 14 to win the annual California Senior Amateur Championship by two shots over Randy Haag. The 55- year-old Wilson, who finally got the USGA monkey off his back with a win at this year's U.S. Senior Amateur, was making his California Senior Amateur debut. "I worked hard this year, harder than I ever have," said Wilson, who finished the 54-hole event with a total of 4-under 212. "I put the work in." On the closing 18th, Haag looked to have a chance when he stuffed his approach shot on the par-4 to within a few feet of the flagstick, while Wilson was just off the green in two. Wilson put an end to any further drama, however, when his curling, 40-foot birdie try stopped at the edge of the cup before finally tumbling in à la Woods' chip on Augusta's 16th at the 2005 Masters. "There's no other amateur that does the things that Jeff does," said Haag, who lost by two shots. "The putts he made coming in were ridiculous. He was perfect. It was fun to watch."
