the decadent spa resorts? The answer is choices abound. Palm Springs tends to cater to those seeking a tax shelter, not a night's shelter. Nonethe- less, affordable lodgings are fairly abun- dant, especially in summer. There is Arrive Palm Springs , a hip, mid-century modern hotel in the uptown design district and known for attracting the beautiful peo- ple from Los Angeles. Rowan by Kimp- ton Hotels is the newest place to rest your head in town, and is situated right in the middle of the action, though you might not need to venture far with the hotel's trendy roof-top bar. The premiere golf resorts are located on the outskirts of Palm Springs, but many centrally-located properties offer access to nearby courses. The upside to setting up shop in Palm Springs is better access to the best restaurants and bars and shopping and entertainment. The choice is yours. Indian Wells is situated east of Palm Springs in what is called Mid-Valley, and lies between Palm Desert, where the an- nual golf cart parade in October launches "the season" with a procession of golf carts decked out as floats buzzing up and down El Paseo, the main commercial drag, and La Quinta, with most resorts, restaurants and shopping set back from Highway 111. The Renaissance Indian Wells Resort & Spa is a spacious recently reno- vated resort, and home to 36 holes at the Indian Wells Golf Resort , which it shares with the Miramonte Indian Wells Resort & Spa among other resorts. The Celebrity course, designed by Clive Clark, known as "The Beauty" has played host to Golf Channel's "Big Break" and the Players course, designed by John Fought, kindly referred to as "The Beast," once hosted the Skins Game.
