rise La Quinta rates at the very least five stars for service, five hearts for romance. La Quinta is also home to PGA West , where you can play a different course six days a week on 109 holes designed by Arnold Palmer, Tom Weiskopf, Pete Dye, Greg Norman and Jack Nicklaus. Dye transformed a flat desert expanse into PGA West Stadium Course , one of the most difficult layouts ever created. It is teeming with sand positioned in all the most inconvenient places, none more men- acing than one named "the San Andreas Fault" bunker at No. 16, and, of course, the 17th-hole island green named "Alca- traz," where Lee Trevino once made an ace at a green that looks to be the size of a lily pad. It is one of three venues along with the Nicklaus Tournament Course at PGA West and La Quinta Country Club that plays host to the PGA Tour's Desert Classic in January, the pro-am event formerly hosted by Bob Hope. In Rancho Mirage, the Dinah Shore Tournament Course at Mission Hills Country Club is one of the valley's many outstanding private courses. It is the home of The ANA Inspiration, the first major tournament of the year on the LPGA Tour. The 18th is a par 5 with an island green, where the winner tradition- ally takes a plunge into Poppy's Pond. Some private courses are attached to hotels with club privileges afforded to hotel guests. Great municipal golf spreads throughout the valley, too, including the aforementioned Indian Wells Golf Resort. Palm Springs owns the 36-hole Desert Willow Golf Re- sort . The Silver Rock Resort's Arnold Palmer Classic Course in La Quinta is set against the backdrop of the Santa Rosa Mountains, and water hazards define The Classic Club in Palm Desert , home to the most courses in the valley. With 120 courses spread throughout the Desert, it is hard to know which courses to highlight and which to omit. So many courses, so little time and so much for golfers to love about visiting Palm Springs.
