The 22nd annual Straight Down Fall Classic at San Luis Obispo Country Club once again attracted a wonderful mix of PGA Tour, Web.com Tour, PGA Tour Champions and PGA professionals as well as elite amateurs from around the country. Now that former PGA Tour winner Paul Stankowski spends more time behind a microphone than lining up putts, he considers the Straight Down Fall Classic to be "my major." "It's basically a gathering of buddies," Stankowski said. "I try to explain it to people back home or people on Tour and they don't get it. You have to experience it." The 36-hole scratch pro-am, best-ball event was held December 1-2, and thrives in the grand tradition of the old Crosby Clambake. It began back in 1997 as the brainchild of Mike Rowley, the founder of active-lifestyle apparel manufacturer Straight Down, to bring together customers, PGA and touring professionals and showcase the brand at the same time. It's become all that and more. The Fall Classic also gives Straight Down the chance to further connect with the San Luis Obispo community, where the company is headquartered. Student athletes from nearby California Poly- technic State University (Cal Poly) are invited to caddie during the tournament, a valuable opportunity especially for the men's and women's golf teams, and junior golfers get to serve as standard bearers. All told, nearly 150 tournament volunteers came over from Cal Poly, including other sports programs and various groups of the student body.
