12 SPRING 2019 | NCGA.ORG Tourists flock to Mission Ranch on the southern end of Carmel, hard by the venerable mission where Padre Junipero Serra lies buried, with hopes of seeing Eastwood, the city's former mayor. Mission Ranch is a hotel with a restaurant, the very place, legend has it, where Eastwood first experienced the ranch as a soldier at nearby Fort Ord. They say it was love at first squint. Eastwood purchased and restored the site into a bustling place with a celebrated view of the Carmel Bay and waves crashing on the rocks at Point Lobos. Carmel Valley is 150 miles south of San Francisco and can be reached by Highway 1 in about four hours. The driving time along Highway 101 is shorter, but the scenery on Highway 1 is surely as beautiful a stretch of road as exists anywhere. Residents of this area like to boast that the valley's 55,000 acres of vineyards are more than Napa's. The 11.5-mile stretch called Carmel Valley Road is lined with fancy inns, resorts and guest ranches, many featuring world-class restaurants that pour the region's wines – pinot noirs, cabernets and chardonnays, which also can be enjoyed at East End Wine Row, consisting of six winetasting rooms. Quail Lodge and Golf Club doesn't have the luxury of ocean views, but it's hard to beat a backdrop that showcases the Santa Lucia Mountains, which separates the Monterey Peninsula and Big Sur from the rest of the world. Three miles east of Carmel-by-the-Sea across Highway 1, Quail Lodge— set amid the valley's ancient oaks —was built in the 1960s by former San Francisco City golf champion Ed Haber, with the course being designed by Robert Muir Graves. Both bungalows and course received refurbishments to the tune of $28 million in 2013. There's also a nine-hole putting course, bocce ball court, swimming pools, tennis courts and spa. Edgar's serves both comfort food and healthy choices and is more serene and elegant than the typical sports bar, with a fireplace and heated patio, a burger to die for and delicious clam chowder on the menu. Katherine Marren, Quail Lodge's director of instruction, sends guests to Poppy Hills Golf Course, the headquarters and tour- nament home of the NCGA, which has become a popular desti- nation along 17-Mile Drive since Robert Trent Jones II renovated the layout in 2014. Pete Dye designed Carmel Valley Ranch Golf Course, the only Pete Dye design in Northern California, to take advantage of dramatic elevation changes. It winds from the valley floor on the front nine, through the foothills before reaching a high note with a spectacular set of mountain holes on the back nine. The Bayonet and Black Horse layouts, which are situated next to each other in Seaside, are one-time military courses at Fort Ord welcoming public play and just 10 minutes north of Pebble Beach. Bayonet is a stern test emphasizing accuracy among the fir-lined fairways while Black Horse is more open, but a sea of sand and undulating greens make scoring a challenge. These are just a handful of the reasons to make your day in Carmel.
