A s the calendar heads deeper into 2019, so does the season for the CIG-sponsored Junior Tour of Northern California. What's the JTNC you ask? Well, in 2008 both the NCGA and the Northern California PGA each had their own junior tournament programs for players ages 10-18. Looking to strengthen the opportunities available for kids, in 2011 the NCGA and NCPGA began combining their resources. It's been a great match. Originally consisting of around 16 events, this season the tour features 27 tournaments. Among the many things that separate the JTNC from other junior tours is that tournaments are set up according to player ability (versus age group). NCGA Rules officials and a dedicated, professional staff complete the picture. Overall, each season runs from August 1 through July 31, culminating in the Tour Championship, where both a Boys' and Girls' Player of the Year are crowned. Other highlights on the JTNC calendar include the annual Challenge Cup, which features the best of the JTNC taking on the best of the PGA Southern California Junior Tour in a Ryder Cup-like format, a Web.com Tour qualifier, where the low male player earns a spot into the Ellie Mae Classic and the Spring Series, where players can earn automatic exemptions into the prestigious NCGA Junior Championship. All events are held at some of the best venues in the region. "The JTNC is seen by the golf community as a very high level of competition, and the integrity of every event we run is a big reason why," JTNC Director Aaron Hartesveldt said. "We give these young players an opportunity to hone their tourna- ment skills. It's inspiring to see the kids succeed." Just what kind of players has the tour produced? Look no further than Bryson DeChambeau (top, page 79). Since winning Boys' Player of the Year honors in 2011, DeChambeau has gone on to win the 2015 U.S. Amateur and five PGA Tour titles. 78 SPRING 2019 | NCGA.ORG J U N I O R T O U R The Place Where It All Starts Now in its 12th season, the Junior Tour of Northern California has become a hotspot for juniors The Junior Tour of Northern California is sponsored by Capital Insurance Group.
