24 SUMMER 2017 | NCGA.ORG COURTESY MEADOW CLUB PGA OF AMERICA rom that initial foray grew a national initiative, the Folds of Honor , a 501-c3 non-profit foundation that provides schol- arships for the spouses and children of military members who have been killed or disabled in combat. Folds of Honor recognizes over 1 million families of the armed forces adversely affected by war during its annual Patriot Golf Day events held during Labor Day weekend. In 2016, Folds of Honor awarded more than 2,800 scholarships. Among the local ranks, the Patriot fundraising efforts at Meadow Club and Orinda Country Club have especially distinguished themselves. "We started small, but I've watched it grow into a band of brothers spanning this great nation," wrote CBS sportscaster and Pebble Beach resident Jim Nantz in the foreword to Rooney's autobiography. From spikes to standard issue boots, golf and the military have long marched in stride in Northern California. By fundraising for soldiers, veterans and their families, NorCal's golf salute to the armed forces provides an important platform for civilians to express appreciation for those who serve. Dan Rooney, a PGA professional (right); Half Moon Bay Golf Links (opposite) celebrates its military ties in more ways than one.
