68 SUMMER 2017 | NCGA.ORG P O P P Y H I L L S N E W S Changes Inside Poppy Hills Clubhouse P oppy Hills Golf Course has been recognized as one of the nation's best public courses. The NCGA-owned facility ranked No. 62 in Golf Digest's 2017-'18 list of "America's 100 Greatest Public Courses"—its first time on the list. "The ranking is a validation of the renovation and a testament to our superintendent Matt Muhlenbruch, Director of Golf Cole Handley and their respective teams," Poppy Hills general manager Brad Shupe said. Having undergone an extensive renovation in 2014 by architect Robert Trent Jones Jr., the course now has a more natural feel and has been compared by some to Pinehurst No. 2 and Pine Valley. Poppy Hills annually co-hosts the Champions Tour PURE Insurance Open (formerly First Tee Open) with Pebble Beach Golf Links each September. In 2018, the course will host its first USGA championship when the U.S. Girls' Junior Championship tees off July 16-21. Other Northern California courses in the rankings are Pebble Beach Golf Links (No.1), Spyglass Hill (No.11), Pasatiempo GC (No.18), CordeValle GC (No.42) and The Links at Spanish Bay (No. 45). "It's nice to join such an illustrious group in the rankings," Shupe said. T here've been some changes inside the golf shop at Poppy Hills. Cole Handley was promoted to Director of Golf for both Poppy Hills and Poppy Ridge. Handley had served as head golf professional since 2014. Scott Adams (pictured), a PGA class 'A' member since 2006, was named the new head pro in May. Adams, 39, previously was the head pro at San Juan Oaks GC in Hollister and CordeValle GC in San Martin. He comes from a family that has roots in the golf industry. His father, Steve, was the Northern California PGA Golf Professional of the Year at San Joaquin CC in 1984. "My service philosophy is about trying to create a memorable guest experience with each visit," Adams said. "I'm thrilled to be here. It's the best zip code to work in anywhere for golf."
