6 SUMMER 2017 | NCGA.ORG I N S I D E T H E L E A T H E R G olf and the military's roots have always run deep, especially here in California where the Golden State is home to more military golf courses than anywhere else in the coun- try. So what better way to honor our military-rich golf history than to celebrate the proud men, women and golf courses that have helped shape its landscape here in Northern California— the subject of this issue's cover story by Judd Spicer on page 22. This topic certainly hits home for me, as I'm proud to say both my father and grandfather served our country in Vietnam and World War II, respectively. During a less-than-stellar round playing with my dad as a kid, I'll never forget when he subtly reminded me that his worst day on the golf course always was better than his best day on the battlefield. Those words still resonate with me today as someone who's fortunate enough to work in an industry I'm so passionate about—but more importantly for all of our brave veterans who relish the inner peace that only golf affords. Now that he's got his first issue under his belt, I'd like to introduce one of my oldest contemporaries, Adam Schupak, as the new editor of NCGA Golf. Adam and I both broke into the publishing business in the early 2000s after graduating college—Colgate for Adam and Villanova for me—and we're still going strong! Adam is a talented editor and writer whose prose has graced the pages of Golfweek, Golf World and The NewYorkTimes to name a few—and his book, Deane Beman: Golf's Driving Force, was the No. 1 selling golf book on Amazon in 2011. We're excited to have his talents on board and know our readers will value his contributions as well. Adam joins the editorial team comprised of my trusted NCGA colleagues Jerry Stewart and Chris Ceman, in addition to the professional staff of our publishing part- ners at PGA Magazine. Our collaborative efforts wouldn't be possible without the help of our team of contributing writers, led by Sports Illustrated'sAlan Shipnuck, The San Francisco Chronicle's Ron Kroichick and KNBR's Brian Murphy. All three turned in some of their finest work this issue, with Kroichick and Murphy's storylines touching on our military-themed issue, and Shipnuck delivering a page-turning profile on two ageless inspirations featured on page 20. Be sure to check out Ron's profile on the military's historic presence at Mare Island Golf Club (page 28) and Brian's entertaining take on the military's influence on the Murphy household. Summertime always renews the discussion of where we should take our next golf trip—and it's hard to argue against visiting our neighbors to the north in Bend, Ore. after digesting Don Jozwiak's travel feature on page 40. Or if you're looking for a quick in-state weekend getaway, look no further than the bustling college town of San Luis Obispo, highlighted on page 12. Speaking of summer, July 16 officially marked the one-year countdown to the 2018 U.S. Girls' Junior at Poppy Hills Golf Course—its first USGA championship. And if this July is any indicator of next, then the best female juniors are in for a treat, as Poppy Hills was recently ranked No. 62 on Golf Digest's list of "100 Greatest Public Courses." Enjoy the issue and here's hoping you can spend your best days of summer on the golf course. Golf's 21-Gun Salute BY RICHARD J.
