T he races for 2017/2018 Boys' and Girls' Player of the Year honors are coming down to the finish line. And there's still a lot that can happen. In the Boys' race, Cupertino's Ethan Chung was in front (as of June 13) but events left on the calendar still included the NCGA Junior Championship, the Summer Series IV Championship and the season-ending JTNC Tour Championship (July 30-31). Over in the Girls' standings, record four-time defend- ing Player of the Year Sabrina Iqbal was still at the top, but in a change from past seasons she could be caught. Here's a look at how things shaped up in the Player of the Year Standings as of June 13: Back to the Future The 2018 NCGA Junior Championship returned to its roots. This year's 89th championship, slated for July 9-10, was set to tee off at Lake Merced Golf Club. The inaugural NCGA Junior was held at Lake Merced GC in 1930. Overall, this will mark the 66th time the championship has been held there. Some of the names who've won the prestigious event at Lake Merced GC? Amateur legends Ernie Pieper Jr. (1930) and Michael Brannan (1973), Bobby Clampett (1976), Jamille Jose (1978–79) and Dorothy Delasin (1998). 70 SUMMER 2018 | NCGA.ORG Player of the Year Race Ethan Chung S abrina Iqbal J U N I O R T O U R U P D A T E Boys Rank Name City Points 1 Ethan Chung Cupertino 1,915 2 Ryan Grauman Alamo 1,563 3 Caleb Shetler Saratoga 1,058 4 Sebastian Iqbal San Jose 1,000 5 Carlos Arieta-Winsett Los Altos 998 Girls Rank Name City Points 1 Sabrina Iqbal San Jose 1,896 2 Mika Jin Fremont 1,808 3 Danielle Suh San Ramon 1,463 4 Sienna Lyford Roseville 1,345 5 Jacqueline Ha San Ramon 1,069
